Duy Tran is currently a Ph. D. student in School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Oklahoma State University. He received his M.S. and B.S. degrees from Oklahoma State University in 2012 and 2010 respectively. His research interests include intelligent transportation systems, machine learning, automated control and computer vision.
This dissertation proposes a collaborative control framework which is based on the assessment of both internal and external risks. The internal risk analysis includes the driver drowsiness detection and the driver intention recognition which help better understand the human driver’s behavior. Steering wheel data and facial expression are used to detect the driver’s drowsiness. Hidden Markov Models (HMM) is implemented to recognize the driver’s intention. For the external risk analysis, a co-pilot or robot utilizes a Collision Avoidance System (CAS) to estimate the collision probability between the ego vehicle and surrounding vehicles. Based on these two risk analyses, we design a novel collaborative driving scheme by fusing the control inputs from the human driver and the co-pilot to obtain the final control input for the vehicle under different circumstances. The proposed collaborative control framework is validated in a simulated assisted-driving testbed.
