Student Jobs with ECE

  1. Typically, first semester/transfer students will not be awarded TA positions.
  2. A recommendation from a faculty member is generally expected in order for you to be considered for a TA/RA position, but is not a guarantee of a position.
  3. The School is responsible for all TA appointments; individual faculty members are responsible for all RA appointments on their own research projects.
  4. If you are hired, you will be contacted by this office to complete payroll sign up paperwork.
  5. You will be required to bring a social security card, and various other forms of identification, a blank voided check (for payroll direct deposit), and have a current work clearance on file with ISS (if needed).
  6. Download the Assistantship Application. Once you have filled out the needed information, email it to Lory Ferguson at lory.ferguson@okstate.edu. Please attach an unofficial transcript to the email.

* Oklahoma state law, Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education policy and institutional policy (catalog p. 180) require that all instructors, including graduate teaching assistants, be proficient in speaking the English language so that they may adequately instruct students. Instruction includes both classroom and laboratory assignments.

Requirements for appointment of non-native English Speaking graduate students to instructional roles in classroom or laboratory settings:

Beginning in the fall of 2010, the requirements for appointment to service in an instructional capacity for non-native English speaking graduate students are (view the flowcharts here):

  1. Score of 26 or higher on the speaking section of the TOEFL iBT (or 8.5 or higher on the speaking portion of the IELTS). Neither the Versant English Test nor the ITA test are required.
  2. Score of 22, 23, or 24 on the speaking section of the TOEFL iBT (or score of 7.0, 7.5, or 8.0 on the speaking portion of the IETLS) AND score 250 or higher on the ITA test. Students scoring from 240 to 249 on the ITA test are required to enroll concurrently in GRAD 5991 in order to engage in instructional duties. The Versant English Test is not required.
  3. Students with a score below 22 on the speaking section of the TOEFL iBT (or below 7.0 on the speaking portion of the IELTS) are advised to seek English language training. After one semester of residence at OSU students may take the Versant English Test. A score of 68 or higher will qualify the student for the ITA exam. Students who receive ITA scores of 250 or higher are cleared for instructional duties. Students scoring from 240 to 249 on the ITA test are required to enroll concurrently in GRAD 5991 in order to engage in instructional duties.
  4. Students who do not have access to the TOEFL iBT or the IELTS prior to arrival at OSU may receive authorization to take the Versant English Test. A score of 68 or higher will qualify the student for the ITA test. Students who receive ITA scores of 250 or higher are cleared for instructional duties. Students scoring from 240 to 249 on the ITA test are required to enroll concurrently in GRAD 5991 in order to engage in instructional duties.
